Getting to Know You: Geraldine Kearns, RN
Among the new faces at LIHSA for the 2025-26 school year is Geraldine “Ger” Kearns. Let’s get to know her.
Ger has 41 years of experience in the nursing profession. She herself is a Nassau BOCES graduate, specifically attending the BOCES Practical Nursing Program in her junior & senior high school years! Ger worked in geriatric extended care facilities during high school & two years after high school. Then, with great pride, she enlisted & served in the United States Air Force. She was stationed at several Air Force far bases including in the Adirondacks, South Korea & ending in California. Honorably discharged after 4 years of active-duty service, she moved to Arizona & continued working in various fields of nursing, including an alcohol & drug treatment center, geriatric extended care & home care.
In the early 90s Ger moved back to her home state, New York & worked in a geriatric extended care facility. Later she continued her education & became a Registered Nurse. Ger has worked with NUMC, Stony Brook Hospital, Northport VA Medical Center in various fields of nursing; multiple Clinical Specialties, Psychiatry – inpatient & outpatient, Ventilator & Respiratory care, Medicine, Surgical, Neurology, Correctional Facilities & Department of Health/Covid case investigations. Last year she started working for BOCES at Willet Avenue Elementary & Robert Williams Middle School Special Education.
When she’s not working, Ger enjoys taking ballroom dancing lessons with her husband. She has been a lover and owner of large dogs since childhood. About 27 years ago, Ger started playing the bagpipes for the Ancient Order of the Hibernians. She is very passionate about playing and enjoys performing with the group at various events including the annual Walk for Autism at Jones Beach & parades on Long Island & Manhattan. Over the last five years, Ger has had less time to commit to playing the bagpipes as she takes care of her 90-year-old mom.
Ger is really enjoying her time at LIHSA already, loving hearing students singing in the hallways and seeing the artwork when she pops into a classroom. She looks forward to keeping our students healthy!
