In the Classroom with Robert Fields

Robert Field has been an industry guest artist for many years at LIHSA. This year he has been an amazing asset to our students in not just one, not just two… but THREE of our programs: Game Design, 3D Animation and Visual Arts. Robert is an illustrator, graphic designer, and educator. His illustrations and graphic designs have appeared in a wide range of publications, media, and venues around the world. He has served as a full-time and adjunct educator at several colleges on Long Island.

In Mr. Minerva’s Game Design class, Field shared his knowledge about designing and creating characters. Recently, the students in that class finished their project with Professor Field drawing an original character for a video game in multiple poses. They went through each stage and were able to see their final product. Attached are pictures of some of the characters. The students were very fond of having Field there, getting real world experience during this project.

In Kevin Edwards’ Visual Arts class, Field has been working with the students on character drawings and the precision techniques required to make such characters used in animated films and cartoons. Mr. Edwards shared how this has been a wonderful full circle moment for him since he had Mr. Field as a college professor and he’s lucky to witness him in his element of teaching something he’s so passionate about to his students.

“Mr. Robert Field taught us a lesson in creating our own cartoon characters, which was an interesting and unique experience, helping us focus more on creativity, our own ideas, and style than what we already knew, letting us step beyond our comfort zone,” said Ciara Elliot, a junior from Iris Wolfson High School.

Lochlan Draper, a junior from Locust Valley High School, shared, “It has been an intriguing and eye-opening experience, providing a unique perspective on unrealistic proportions of the body. Mr. Field has been very helpful and friendly in demonstration and in personal constructive advice.”

The 3D Animation students have been working on character design and development for animation purposes and learning new techniques that most students don’t get exposed to until later in their careers. Field has been of great value to our students.

We are all very fortunate to have Robert Field as an industry artist who is so talented and knowledgable.
