CalArts Master Class 2026

LIHSA’s Dance Department was thrilled to welcome California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) for a contemporary masterclass led by Joseph Davis! A dancer, choreographer, and CalArts faculty member, Davis trained at The Juilliard School and performed internationally with BODYTRAFFIC. He guided our dancers through improvisation and a contemporary combination, which students then manipulated to explore their own creative choices.

We also welcomed Kevin Whitmire, Associate Director of Recruitment, who joined Davis for a Q&A following class. They discussed CalArts’ BFA dance and MFA programs, shared insight into studying the arts in college, and answered students’ questions about the college process. It was an informative and inspiring visit, and a wonderful experience for our LIHSA dancers!

After the masterclass, students expressed how impactful the experience was for them. Not only did they have fun but were given the opportunity to learn more about being dancers who can show personality as well as execute the material.

We thank assistant principal, Ms. Priscilla Velazquez for helping bring such amazing talent from CalArts to provide our students with this meaningful experience. Please keep scrolling to see photos.
