Getting to Know You: Kevin Edwards

We are delighted to introduce a new, part-time faculty member, Kevin Edwards, who is in our Media Arts Department!

Kevin is a Nassau BOCES graduate of Barry Tech where he focused on Media Art and Design. He is very proud of his BOCES education and credits his former teacher, Doris Bové Aresta, for all the skills he learned. He attended Barry Tech for both his junior and senior years and was honored with the Joseph M. Barry George Farber Award and the ACTEA Award for scholarly excellence.

After high school, Kevin went on to earn his Bachelors in Visual Communications: Art & Graphic Design from Farmingdale State College. His first job after graduation was a communications role for an insurance company, focusing on graphic design, managing their three websites and photography. For the past ten years, Kevin has worked in the East Meadow School District Creative Arts Program and also manages their graphics department and promotional brochures. He subsequently established himself with renowned wedding photography studios, serving clients throughout New York City and Long Island. Photography is a job he loves and continues to do. When he’s not photographing weddings at The Pierre, The Plaza, and the like, he’s traveling the world – he has trips lined up to shoot weddings in Turkey, Ireland, and Monaco over the next year alone!

Kevin is a Nassau BOCES alum!

Last year, Kevin was honored to step into a teaching role at Barry Tech, and began giving back to the students. That led to seeking a full-time position this year at LIHSA. He’s thrilled to be part of the Nassau BOCES system that gave him a clear career path and the skills to do it when he was in high school. “Barry Tech literally changed my life,” Kevin shared. “I received so much from BOCES…it’s only right that I should give back.”

As a Media Arts Teacher, Kevin has exciting plans for this year. He hopes to take his students to SkillsUSA. When he was in Barry Tech, he competed at regional and state level and he led his Barry Tech students last year also through the regional and state competitions.  Kevin feels it’s not only a great opportunity for students, but also another way for LIHSA to shine.

Kevin is also excited to help students perform well in their AP Portfolio class. He’s planning for a 2-day Digital Arts day and is excited to connect with students who have a deep interest in photography. He’s looking forward to serving as the National Art Honor Society’s Advisor and wants it to be a platform to invite more students from other disciplines to participate and build a bigger community. Additionally, Kevin is excited to collaborate with other classes so that his students can be involved in all aspects of the school such as creating playbills, painting sets, and designing banners. “It’s exciting for artists to see their work in the real world.”

Kevin’s life revolves around art. His photography brings him to far away and exciting places and when he travels he brings his camera so he can always capture the moments that will inspire and lead to new creations. “It’s important,” he says, “to love what you do and be proud of what you create. It’s such a gift!”
